A genuine antique Map of Harwich, Ramsgate, Sandwich

This map, from a copper engraving, was produced for John Cary's Survey of the Roads of England and Wales and a part of Scotland. This work was commissioned by the Postmaster General and shows the country in sectional maps. Up until this time most maps of the UK were county maps, limiting the geographical data to the county boundaries. Cary's 1794 atlas, along with the early Ordnance Survey, was one of the first attempts at producing maps not limiting the scope to the county boundaries.
John Cary (c1754 - 1835) was an engraver and producer of maps, charts and globes from his London based business. He colaborated with many cartographers and publishers, was the first to use the meridian of Greenwich on British maps and was awarded a gold medal by the Royal Society.

Condition: original hand colour, slight foxing, otherwise very good.
