Offered for sale here is another container from my grandparents and great grandparents home-they were collectors and amassers of all things unusual and spent a good deal of time in India in the 19th C.I am only describing what I see so do ask all else as I am not an expert on these objects.
A magnificent 260cm x 200m wide antique entirely hand made cover
This is as I understand it a bedcover or possible a refectory table cover.
It was bought at the Castle Howard yorkshire sale in the 1980s with a pair of 18th c textile huge curtains and other textile pieces.
It is entirely hand enbroidered with silver and gilt thread in massive swirls and birds and hence is weighty-It is fringed and backed with very fine silk-whilst the condition is splendid there are some small areas of pulling on the fine silk to the reverse with age now but the whole piece is spectacular.
the colours are brick and dark mustard/ochre with silver and gold thread-see close up pictures for an idea.
please ask all you need to know or you are welcome to come and see it if you are local
very heavy and will ship abroad but check costs first as very weighty.
tracked and insured postage
On 10-May-08 at 13:22:11 BST, seller added the following information:
I have been asked so many questions regarding this item and wanted to add a few notes which I hope will help all.
the condition of the piece is very good but due to its age there are some weaknesses on the back silk lining backing cloth and there are 2 slits close to the fringe on 2 edges of around 10" on the back on the backing silk so you can see the interlining which is an ivory cotton wadding cloths of sorts as I see inside.these will need stitching up and although they dont affect the front they are worth pointing out.
I have been asked but many if it is like the piee that was sold in the rare textiles section in the large auction in New york last year at Christies but as I dont have the knowledge or contents of that sale I wouldnt know. As I said in my listing you are if you wish very welcome to come and see it if that helps as I know nothing about textiles except to say its visually beautiful and charming piece.
Finally we are away until Monday 19th May when I shall mail the boxed item to the winner- Kindest regards
regarding postageI shall obtain an insurance premium sum to the item to add to the parcelforce cost if the item sells over £200, with thanks
