This buy it now is for this Amazing Antique French printed textile that dates 1849~
What an amazing textile find~This glorious antique textile is a very early print and was designed by Ulric Tournier for Schwartz Huguenin of Mulhouse around c.1849 ~This is a very rare, fully intact French Chintz valance~ I it is a rare and wonderful find indeed. Fully intact and complete with trim. This textile uses a range of printing techniques including block print to create this amazing Rose floral design!~ Chintz is actually an anglicized word which comes from the Indian word Chint, which meant veriegated or spotted! ~ however the term Chintz today refers to a textile that has a glazed finish. The glaze is either a glaze of wax, starch or resin . Originally they would be rubbed in by hand using a shell or rounded smooth stone!!~ The shiny glaze finish was thought to repel dust and dirt so it was very popular in early days. This particular print has the most amazing picotage! It helps to date the textile and really makes this an amazing print! The wonderful rose design and its foliage have been block printed on to the sand striped ground, amazing ~ The picotage surrounds the lovely head of roses~ the colors of this textile include : warm fawn ground, with lovely antique pinks, red, cream, beautiful teal greens. This textile is in original condition and the fabric has never been washed, so the original glaze is still intact. This textile is a large valance that would have hung in a window. The back is a natural finely woven cotton~ This textile still has the trim that runs the entire valance, at the bottom of the scallops it creates little circles! ~ Charming. The trim is a cotton core with wool wrapped around and the colors are deep moss green, terra cotta and cream. This can be removed and used also ~*~ I simply could not cut this textile~ it is an amazing find and would be wonderful for any textile collection, and would make an amazing piece used as is~ The panels of this fabric are 100% hand stitched together and the bottom has an amazing tape that is all hand stitched also under the trim. The hand stitches are so tiny, it would have taken SUCH a long time to create this valance. This textile would make an amazing wall display also~*~
This Antique French Valance is HUGE and measures 7.4 feet long and the deepest drop is the side and it is 4.42 feet drop. The middle section drop is 26.7 inches. (226cm long 135 at the side, the deepest part of the scallop~ the drop on the section directly in the middle is 68cm )
This textile is in original unwashed condition and there are many storage marks on this piece. The back has many storage marks so best if going to be used as a valance, that the back not be seen. The front also has many storage marks , which will most likely wash, however I can't be sure that they will all wash. There is some light foxing on this textile. ( small grey marks ) that I know will not wash. It is my opinion that these marks do not detract from the spectacular textile, that has survived in amazing condition. The trim also has some areas of damage, where it has pulled away from the textile, and also has been distorted so has lengths that are not usable, but most survived in lovely condition. ~*~ There are many photographs and number 10 shows the back with the marks~ please email should you require further photographs! ~*~ .
