We receive a number of emails every week from people whom have purchased antique or vintage stoves on eBay that require attention or repair and that were described as being ready for use and were not.

Obviously this is a problem as amateur (and some "professional") sellers make a "buying trip" and then want a quick turnaround on their investment; they probably don't care what happens after you've had your "beautiful" stove delivered and you've left good feedback before you try to use the stove.

As regular sellers on eBay whom supply fully overhauled and working stoves (about 8% of our stoves are sold on eBay, please see our feedback and pictures of stoves sold/available), we feel that some protection should be available to potential buyers or buyers after they have received their stove and wish to seek compensation.

In the event you are interested in buying a stove on eBay or have a stove that you are unsure of, we will, for a one-off fee of £45 give you appropriate advice. We will require detail photographs of the stove you have/intend to purchase and we can guide you in which photographs to ask the seller for.

We have received an email from a seller that felt this listing in its original format was directed solely at a stove they had sold and, whilst our original comments and observations were purely factual, might be construed as being personal. This was not the case, it was simply a set of factual references to a recent eBay transaction to illustrate a point. The seller did, however, state to us that he had at no time said the stove was fit to use.

On balance, there have been a number of stoves sold recently, the descriptions of which (and suggestions for installation) have given us, and other stove sellers, cause for concern and we generally contact sellers to let them know if we feel there are problems with their stove or listing. We are aware that other stove sellers are also keen to keep buyers safe and have received messages of support from them and from eBayers whom have bought stoves under the misapprehension that they were in safe working order.

The point regarding stove safety and sellers' descriptions has been made and this, hopefully, will make eBay a safer place to purchase a useable antique or vintage stove; perhaps the most pertinent question you can ask a seller is "Is this stove complete and safe to use for the purpose for which it was made?"
