~*~Hello and thank you for looking~*~

What an amazing textile treasure~ this amazing textile is a 19th century , French Ciel de lit ~ dating c1850-1870
Museum quality, amazing heirloom textile ~ a once in a lifetime find~ ~*~ Though one of the most Wonderful textiles, this is the most difficult textile I have ever had to photograph!~ of course the most grand! ~ this wonderful Ceil de lit dates 1850-1870 and is French. The wonderful Ikat woven cotton would have been hand dyed most likely using woad to create the wonderful soft blues. The fabric is 100% light weight cotton. There are 2 very large panels of fabric, each of the two panels measures 2.8 yards long and the width on each is 3.8 yards wide~ creating an enormous space for it to be opened out ~ Each of the panels is adorned with the most wonderful Napoleon III passementerie, woven by hand. The trim runs the length of both curtains, so 4 sides have this STUNNING trim. Therefore the panels can be kept open at both sides if desired and the trim will be visible ~ it is heavenly! The passementerie decorates BOTH sides of each panels and also as you can see near the top of each panel is a matching passementerie that is without tassels~ the panels are all 100% hand stitched and the passementerie is all hand stitched to each panel. This ceil de lit has over 11 yards of antique hand made tassle passementerie and approx. 4 yards of ribbon passementerie ~ this would look AMAZING draped over a bed as a Bed Canopy~ but also this textile can be used in many many different ways~*~
The hardware of the textile is made of a wooden frame with a veneer of hardwood. The center post that hangs it from the ceiling I would be surprised if it dated any later than 1700, ( though I can not date this for sure! ) hand forged. The panels are all trimmed in hand woven linen at the top and there are many original rings that hold the textile to the hardware.
The center wooden ring measures 26 inches long by 19 inches wide. The weight is 10 pounds~
Condition: The panels each have long tears that run up the length of the panels. These tears are straight , so would be somewhat easy to repair. . Please email me for photographs of the tears. If the panels are to be draped as shown, they may not need repair and can just be laid as is~ however if one wanted to gather the fabric to drape, they would need to be repaired. One of the panels has a very long tear up the length, that is near the side, so would need repairing if one were to hang~ these can be done by a seamstress and would be lovely hand stitched. They are long tears, but well worth the time to repair ( taken into account in the price) There is one repair that has been hand stitched already , that looks delightful! There are also holes that have been hand stitched ( darns) in each panel. Again depending on what condition the owner would like it to be in. There are also a few holes in each panel that can again, either be re-enforced to close or repaired by hand. Each panel is in original unwashed condition with light storage dirt that will ~ again up to the owner how they wish to wash the textile. Some collectors are very particular about the textile being in original condition, so I strive to keep it as original as possible!!! Some of the original hardware on the ceiling fixture is missing, so rings will need to be added to the top in order for the panels to hang properly. ~ There is some slight fading near the bottom of the panels. If you would like photographs of the damaged areas, please email me. There are only 12 photographs allowed on the site, so difficult to show everything that I would like to! ~*~ A totally wonderful creation~ *~*

The individual condition will be described to the best of my ability however, often flaws are inherent in vintage and antique textiles. Please email me if condition is vital to your purchase and we can discuss condition in detail. When describing my textiles, I use my best judgment, knowledge and experience to estimate their age. I have had many years of research and hands on experience with these wonderful textiles. I describe items as Antique if I estimate the age to be 100 years of age or greater. EBay currently define an antique as dating to 1930 or earlier. I describe items as Vintage, as per the dictionary definition, if I feel the textile has age, or is outdated or old-fashioned, dating from the past. If I use both Antique/Vintage when describing a textile, it is because I feel the textile is most likely 100 years of age or greater, but may fall just short of that date. I often work in collaboration with other colleagues and textile specialists to ascertain the approximate age of my textiles, however ultimately any statement of age is a matter of best judgment only~*~I also use my best professional judgment to ascertain the fiber content of my textiles, using sight and feel and where possible historical information and context to help me to identify plants used in a particular era. However, because my textiles are old, any statement of fiber content is again always only my best professional assessment. ~*~ I feel privileged and honored to bring these textiles to you, I sincerely thank you for your interest ~*~
