A finely made object, and a quality working tool, great for hunts, shoots, deer stalking, bird watching, or any number of wholesome autumnal pursuits; not great for spying on neighbours.
J.H. Steward Ltd was established in London, in 1856. Steward was the head optician of the company and had businesses at Cornhill and at 406 and 457 the Strand. In the middle of the nineteenth century he became the optician to the Government, as well as the National Rifle, and National Artillery Associations. The company made several other measuring instruments, such as barometers, microscopes, compasses and sundials.
