Description:
An excellent portrait oil on artist's canvas dating circa 1850 - 1870, framed - approx 31 X 27 inches (78.74 X 68.58cm).

This is an excellent English School oil dating from the Victorian period.
The portrait depicts a fabulous study of a 'well to do' middle aged gent appearing to be rather studious. Classically set on a dark ground, the subject looks to his right, having a pale complexion, hazel coloured eyes and thinning titan hair. It has been suggested that the portrait may be of 19th Century scientist "Michael Faraday", although this is cannot be substantiated. The gen holds a scroll in his left hand and a quill in his right. A stunning painting, beautifully executred with clever use of light and shade. A true antique oil painting, finely detailed.
Date:
The picture may date to circa 1850 - 1870 but it is difficult to be certain.
Framing:
Contemporary classic scroll and floral moulded Gesso work. Finish: Gilt.
The oil is mounted on a stretcher.
Condition:
The oil is in good codition for its age. There is some crazing in areas, but the oil is stable and shows no signs of flaking. The oil may benefit from a light clean. The large heavy frame has one or two pieces of moulding missing, otherwise in good order.
