I have just completed the full restoration of this beautiful antique French carriage clock. The case, movement and escapement have all been completely dismantled, cleaned, polished, oiled and carefully reassembled after having been checked for wear. The clock is now working perfectly keeping very good time.
Height (with handle folded down) 4.75 inches (12 cms); Depth 2.5 inches (6.5 cms); Width 3 inches (7.5 cms).
CASE: The all-brass case has attractive and unusual filligree insets to the base, top and all four pillars and an unusual inset rosette decorating the folding handle. It sits on 4 small turned brass feet. It has not been re-lacquered (so as to facilitate cleaning in future).
MOVEMENT: The all-brass 8 day movement is French and is stamped G.B. in an oval lozenge inside the front plate. All component parts of the movement are stamped with the manufacturer's matching batch number. The case is in perfect condition as is the top-mounted escapement - visible through the top rectangular bevelled glass.
DIAL & HANDS: The white enamel-on-copper dial is in perfect condition as are the original blued-steel hands. The dial bears the inscription of the original retailer "HILLS WEYBRIDGE".
GLASSES: The bevelled glasses are all unusually thick. There are some small corner chips to all except the top rectangular glass. These in no way detract from the appearance of the clock and do not really show in the 'photos: I mention them only in the interests of strict accuracy.
KEY: The clock comes with its original double-ended brass key - one end is for winding the clock and the other is for adjusting the hands. A lever for fast/slow adjustment is accessed through the opening rear door which has its own small brass knob.
All in all, this is a first class example of these superbly made antique french brass carriage clocks.
