This is a one of a kind, vintage art oil painting on canvas, made in Cuzco/Peru.
The elegant beauty and exceptional quality of this outstanding piece of peruvian art are overwhelming.
A captivating, very rare oil depicting the Archangel Zadkiel.
Zadkiel is thought by some to be one of the seven archangels who stand before God.
Zadkiel means the "Righteousness of God"
It is believed that Zadkiel was the angel who stopped Abraham from killing his young son, Isaac, as a sacrifice to God.
In our painting he wears a silken gold brocaded tunic. The deep lace flounce on the kiltlike lower section matches the flowing sleeves. His footwear is a high leather shoe with gold lacing and trim. Fine soft stockings are held in place with jeweled buckles, and brooches also clasp the sleeves and collar. The half-open wings and swirling cloak give the impression that he has just landed from on high-even of weightlessness. Here we see the metamorphosis of the traditional stiff figure into Baroque exuberance-a style peculiar to Alto Peru. Even in Mexico such flamboyance is not encountered.
Details are embellished with golden leaf, an indicative of the Cuzco School of Arts.
This addition of stenciled or painted gold leaf onto oil paintings is called, as it was in early contracts, brocateado. It is also sometimes termed sobredorado (overgilding) and has also been described as escarchado.
The history of the Peruvian painting has its origins at the colonial era. The Spanish painters who arrived at the Viceroyalty of Peru taught their techniques to the local artists, and they began to shape in its linen cloths its own representations, proposing a new iconographic interpretation of the Peruvian reality. The catholic divinities were adapted to indigenous sensitivity and gave like result an own and singular way that had its maxim expression in the "School of Cusco Painting" ( La Escuela Cusqueña), during centuries XVII and XVIII.
This painting has been done in the style of the works of La Escuela Cusqueña, the history of which is traced to the 17th century. Originally influenced by Spanish and Italian artists, this school was comissioned to paint sacred art in churches and monasteries throughout the Peruvian city of Cusco after the area was devastated by an earthquake in 1650. The collected efforts of numerous artists gradually evolved into a unique yet harmonious and consistent style, devoid of individualism.
Bronze Leaf was used to accentuate finishing touches on this magnificent portrait.

- Shipping/handling within the continental US is $18.99. Shipping to Canada is $24.99. Rest of the world shipping is $34.99.
- We combine shipping when possible for winning
bidders on multiple items and auctions. You can save up to 50% on shipping when you buy multiple items.
- Necklaces are not eligible for combined shipping/tracking number.
- Shipping/handling charges do not necessarily reflect actual shipping costs.
- We usually ship through USPS Priority Mail, which delivers packages in 2-3 days from the shipping date in most cases.
- Items are shipped within 2 business days after
payment is received.
- You will receive a shipping notification when the item is on its way.
- Some heavy items may be shipped using
FedEx Ground (tracking number available).
- At an additional cost we can ship your item through USPS Express Mail,
FedEx 2-day or FedEx Overnight service. Feel free to e-mail us and ask for these special shipping services.
- Insurance is optional but is highly recommended. Once we ship the item, it is already out of our hands and there is nothing we can do if the items get lost. For items under $50, add $1.30; for items between $50-$100 add $2.20. For orders over $100 please send me an e-mail to give you the cost of insurance.
- We ship worldwide (international customers please email for shipping charges).
- For international orders, we use USPS Global Priority Mail system, which usually delivers items in 4-6 days from the shipping date. We do not offer tracking number or insurance for international orders. We are not responsible for custom taxes that may apply to international orders.
