Ancient Pre-Columbian Narino Footed Bowl C.1000 AD
This is an ancient Pre-Columbian Narino culture footed bowl from Columbia/Ecuador, ca. 1000 - 1200 A.D. This form is known as the Piartal-Tuza style, characterized by an attractive tan slip painted in a reddish-brown geometric pattern (here, the pattern is of saw-tooth and lines slashed across the piece) - it has been restored from large fragments with one tiny area of loss painted in on the rim (left unpainted on the outside to show the missing area).
Black dendrites, or maganese deposits, (which take several hundred years to develop), are evident throughout the surface and clearly authenticate this wonderful artifact.

The Narino flourished from around 800 AD to 1500 in the area of present day Columbia and Ecuador; they are known chiefly for their spectacularly deep (and therefore well-preserved) chieftains burials, and their pottery, which was typically tan and red-brown; for more info on the culture, see:
I bought this piece from a dealer years ago, and I am now disposing of parts of my antiquities collection - please see my recent feedback for previous items I have sold from it. This item comes with its original certificate of authenticity from the extremely reputable Howards Nowes Gallery in New York, where I purchased it.
