Tensho (aka "Tensyo") No. 02
Tensho are the ancient precursor to Kanji. They are characterized by sinuous lines of uniform thickness (lacking in serifs, or trailing upsweeps).
Tensho also appear somewhat more pictographic, resembling the character's underlying meaning more closely than modern Kanji.
Today, tensho are still frequently used when making hanko stamps (or chop seals), particularly larger- sized ones use by creative persons.
This book shows hundreds of phrases written in Tensho, besides their modern Kanji equivalent.
Tensho are also common graphic element in traditional Japanese tattoo art.
