With Easyweld rods you can now do aluminium welding which were previously too difficult or uneconomic. Aluminium boat repair was often impractical because of the very thin guage aluminium used in boat hulls. Now aluminium skins of almost any thickness can be welded successfully, easily and cheaply. Easyweld can be applied with any handheld torch - Oxyacetylene, Mapp, Propane or Butane.
The Easyweld rod is an essential product for the D.I.Y enthusiast and a valued addition to the professional workshop for aluminium welding.

How to Braze or Weld Aluminium and Zinc Alloy
Easyweld will work with propane, butane, mapp, oxyacetylene or any fuel source as long as the material is brought up to 389'C ( 732'F ) before applying the rod. The material must be cleaned with a stainless steel brush because the rod will not adhere to stainless steel. The rod will not adhere to the material being brazed if it is cleaned with any other type of brush.
How to Braze Aluminium |
Unlike conventional aluminium brazing techniques, brazing with Easyweld is very simple. There is only one rod type, which works on all grades and alloys of aluminium.
You do not need to identify the specific alloy or choose a brazing filler to match. All you need are the parts to be repaired, the Easyweld rods and a heat source. Just follow these four steps for a perfect brazed repair.
1 Preparation Brush surface of the part to be repaired thoroughly under heat to break up the surface coating of aluminium oxide. |
2 Heating Heat the aluminium parts hot enough for the rod to flow without the aid of the flame, thoroughly tinning the surface. |
3 Tinning Brush tinned surface under heat, thoroughly filling the open pores. |
4 Filling With sides thoroughly tinned, flow in enough rod to fill the vee. Be sure filler fuses with the tinned surface without melting the aluminium. |
How to Weld Zinc Alloy and Zinc-based Die-cast Metals |
1 Preparation Vee the broken edges of the zinc alloy to about 45 degrees, clean the surface of any plating or scale back from edges of the vee 1/8 of an inch. |
2 Heating Heat until it starts to flow. Turn flame paralell to surface and with side of flame, hold at this heat. Heat welding rod to same temperature. Now with both bases and welding rod at this temperature, touch rod to the break and rod will flow into vee, thoroughly fusing the parts. |
3 Reparing Repeat operation until break is completely filled. Be sure to kick rod into weld to break down skin resistance as filler rod will lay on surface and will not fuse if only heat is applied. |
General Tips
- Always wear safety gloves and glasses.
- Brush the area of the metal parts to be welded with the stainless steel brush until shiny.
- Clean the surface thoroughly with a stainless steel brush only. (A common steel brush will contaminate the aluminium.)
- Heat the item to be repaired evenly. DO NOT apply the flame directly to the rod; hold the torch approximately 1.5" from work surface
- As you heat the base, rub the rod vigorously against the heated piece until the rod flows.
- Where possible, use a firebrick to clamp and heat your work on.
This will provide a good working surface and help maintain the temperature.
- When the joint is made draw the flame away slowly and allow the item to cool naturally and completely. DO NOT cool quickly e.g. water or oil bath
