WHY BUY ALIEN?

You would be buying a bike from someone who's put together complete bikes and kits for over eighteen months and who is one of the longest established independent ebike sellers in the UK - please see my past listings and feedback. I know what the drawbacks are in many electric bikes, weight, battery technology, quality issues etc. and with this bike I think I've eliminated pretty much all of them.

However, I've tried to keep both bikes and kits at a price which I believe is extremely good value without cutting corners.

So, if you're in the market now for an electric bike and you want it to be lightweight and powerful, you won't find much better than these - especially at this price.

THE BIKE

This particular "Special" uses exactly the same components as the "Gents" special but is designed specifically to suit customers who are looking for a bike for a height range from 5'0" to 5'10" or thereabouts and is easy to ride and easy to carry things on. It utilises a 17" unisex frame design. Fitting a pair of panniers is no problem using the rack which houses the battery pack.

I've used the 36 Volt 10Ah Lithium Ion Battery Pack which is used in the Alien Kits along with a 250 Watt U.K. Legal Motor in the Front Wheel and a 15Ah controller making this one of the most powerful bikes of its type.

It's fitted with full front and rear mud guards as I'm fed up coming back from a ride with a big streak up my back, the front and rear LED lights are integrated with the battery as I keep forgetting to fit new AA's to my old lights and, even though you'll perhaps never have to use it, the bike is fitted with the ultra low gear Shimano Tourney set.

Also, for those unfortunate enough to have problems with their back or knees or indeed those who (like me!) don't like pedalling at all, you will be glad to hear that the bike can be used on the throttle from a standstill. (Unfortunately, you might just have to pedal going up a hill though!! This particular bike may help you up more than most due to its uprated controller.)

The guys who supply me with the components for the kits sent me some pannier bags free of charge so I'm giving a set away with each bike! They're ok but I would suggest using a couple of tie wraps to secure them to the bottom of the pannier frame. But, hey! They're FREE!

An Alien "special" is never going to be cheap though as it uses the best of the electronics available to me and takes up quite a bit of time to do so these bikes are a little bit more than other Alien bikes! However, if you compare the specification against many of the mainstream e-bikes, you're still paying around half that price!

ADVANTAGES OF LITHIUM ION

Li-ion batteries are lighter than other equivalent batteries and MUCH lighter than Lead Acid batteries. They do not suffer from memory effect and also have a low self-discharge rate of approximately 5% per month, compared with over 30% per month in nickel metal hydride (NiMH) batteries.

However, to preserve your lithium-ion battery it should be charged early and often so when you come back from a ride, simply plug the bike into the charger regardless of how much power you've used.

The Battery Management System, integrated into the charger and the controller, will take care of how much charge the battery needs. Please note that if you're going to leave your bike for a long time then charge up the battery every now and then to ensure that the battery charge doesn't fall to too low a level.

All other items are standard bicycle parts and can easily be obtained from your local bike shop. NB: You will download a set of instructions when you order. This includes a section on how you MUST take care of the battery to ensure your warranty remains valid.
