The Mosquito was a British twin engine multi role aircraft originally conceived as a fast unarmed bomber. With the bulk of the aircraft constructed from laminated plywood , the Mosquito was also known as the Wooden Wonder. It served successfully in a range of roles from low to medium altitude daytime bomber, high altitude night bomber, pathfinder, day or night fighter, fighter-bomber and phot reconnaissance aircraft.
The Messerschmitt Me262 was the world's first operational jet fighter aircraft and was deployed in a fighter, fighter bomber, interceptor and reconnaissance roles. Despite Hitler's wishes to use the Me 262 in a fighter bomber role, it was deployed as a defense against Allied heavy bomber formations over the heart of Germany where it could attack and disappear quickly before Allied fighters had a chance to engage. The Me262 was, however, vulnerable on landing and many were lost to low patrolling Allied fighters. A significant number of Me262 were also lost in training exercises and during take off and landing.
On 25th July 1944 an Me 262 damaged a Mosquito reconnaissance aircraft in what was the first ever victory for a turbojet fighter. In the first 3 months of 1945, Me 262 were responsible for the loss of 13 Mosquitos over Berlin. Prior to this the Mosquito had been virtually untouchable.
A wonderful kit that is a classic. Not to be missed.
