Agave bracteosa
Squid Agave/Spider Agave
Native to Mexico ( North America)
Found growing in the Coahuilan Desert where it grows on vertical, limestone cliffs between 3,000 and 5,500 feet.
A small, clumping, Agave from Mexico reaching up to 3 ft in height with long, lanceolote, light-green leaves. The leaves have minute serrations along the margins, no teeth and no spine at the end. The leaves emerge vertically in the centre and arch gracefully back towards the outside of the plant.
Mature plants produce a spectacular flower spike which can reach between 3 to 5 ft in height, with a dense terminal cluster of beautiful white flowers; distinctive from all other Agaves.
Agave bracteosa can tolerate extremes of both cold and scorching heat. It has withstood temperatures as low as minus five degrees on the nursery but to withstand this sort of temperature it must have a very free-draining soil. In colder areas it can be grown as a container plant and brought indoors over the winter period if necesary.
Once established this plant can withstand long periods of drought.
