Description: An excellent figural landscape print on artist's paper dating circa 1890 - 1900, framed - approx 32 X 43 inches (81.28 X 109.22cm).
This is an excellent Dutch Romanticist print dating from the Victorian period. The figural landscape depicts a wonderful Dutch winter scene after the romanticist artist "Barend Cornelis Koekkoek". A classic print, after this artist, with a textured finish to imitate an oil on canvas. This pretty scene depicts a horse and sleigh standing on the frozen river with families and children enjoying the delights of the frozen winter atmosphere. A large and impressive piece from the late 19th Century, beautifully depicted with intricate detailing. The painting is signed, within the print, "B.C. Koekkoek 1845".
There is a sticker verso for "George Hughes - Fine Art Dealer, Newcastle-upon-Tyne".
An oleograph is a coloured lithograph impressed with a canvas grain and varnished to make it look like an oil painting. Oleographs were popular in the second half of the 19th century.

Artist Biography:
| Barend Cornelis Koekkoek (Dutch 1803 - 1862) came to be known during his lifetime as the Prince of Landscape Painting and was by far the most applauded landscapist of his time and regarded as the founding father of Dutch romantic landscape painting. The recipient of endless awards and decorations, he counted among his clients King Friedrich-Wilhelm IV of Prussia, Tsar Alexander II, and King Willem II of the Netherlands.Barend Cornelis Koekkoek was born in Middelburg, in a family of painters. He studied painting with his father and later attended the Amsterdam Academy. With a group of fellow painters he travelled round Germany and Belgium, where he found inspiration for his mountain and woodland landscapes. In 1841, in the German town of Cleves, he founded his own art academy, which was also attended by Dutch painters such as Paul Gabriel. Koekkoek was a highly successful painter, who became quite famous during his lifetime. His detailed landscapes are characteristic examples of Dutch Romantic art. | |
Framing: Contemporary classic scroll and floral moulded Gesso work. Finish: Gilt.
|
Condition: The oleograph is in good condition for its age, still retaining good colour. There are one or two marks, namely to the top left (as viewed) in the upper part of the sky area where there are a couple of little holes, of little consequence, only adding to character and authenticity. The heavy frame has a few chips and pieces of moulding missing consistent with age and this type of delicate material. |
