After Herbert W. Weekes Donkey Chickens Oil Painting
Free Delivery to United Kingdom and Ireland

Description:
An exquisite animal portrait oil on artist's canvas, signed "Weekes" after "Herbert William Weekes" and dating circa 1900. Framed - approx 20 X 18 inches (50.8 X 45.72cm).

This is an exquisite English School oil dating from the Victorian period.
The animal portrait depicts a delightful scene of a grey donkey resting in an orchard beneath a tree full of blossom. The kind old donkey rests, with his ears slightly back, tollerating a brightly coloured cockerel and his hens, pecking for grubs and seeds in the long grasses of the orchard. Sympathetically painted, this fine rural scene depicts the English countryside in full spring summer glory. A classic composition after this well known artist who frequently depicted donkeys in his works.
The work is signed "Weekes" lower left after "Herbert William Weekes".  The painting is classically in the style of, and from the same period, as this most popular Victorian artist who often portrayed donkeys in the most charming way.
Date:
The oil probably dates to around 1900.
Artist Biography:

Herbert William Weekes (Born 1842 - 1904 - fl. 1856 - 1901) was a London painter of genre and animal subjects and probably the brother of Henry Weekes. Weekes was one of a few talented artists who transformed animal painting of the 19th Century from its traditional status as a record of animals to that of humorous enchanting circumstances. Weekes exhibited 37 paintings at the Royal Academy, and also at the Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Society of Painters in Oils and in the provinces. (Thanks to Haynes Fine Art of Broadway).
Framing:
Contemporary classic scroll and floral moulded Gesso work. Finish: Gilt.
The oil is mounted on a stretcher.
Condition:
The painting is generally in good condition for its age, set behind glass within this large impressive gesso work frame. There is a little sign of the oil flaking on the donkey's rump, the oil having general crazing consistent with age. There has been a very old repair to the canvas to the bottom right hand corner. The frame shows cracks wich some gesso work missing in places, consistent with age and this type of delicate material. The frame also shows some old signs of dead woodworm to the back.
