Forceful Mothers (2006), by Bernard Mensah

www.GoldCoastArtists.com

Description:

These women work as a trio to keep each other company in their daily tasks. This is to pass the time and make tedious jobs less monotonous. They are forceful because they are strong willed and dedicated to their work of building their home and developing their children into valuable members of society. Their brightly coloured clothing is reminiscent of 'Kente' cloth; a hand-woven material which is worn by many Ghanaians. Luxurious, it often has gold thread woven through its many intricate designs. Men of high status such as Chieftains, often wear this to formal functions and perhaps Church on a Sunday, it is a national treasure.

In this exquisite painting Mensah has made the three women who appear to only be carrying water, cocoa beans and other trade items emerge into stunning ladies, almost as elegant dancers.

Bernard Mensah started schooling at the Fanchenebra Metropolitan Authority primary and junior secondary school in Kumasi, Ashanti Region, Ghana. He later attended the College of Arts and Industry also in Kumasi where he acquired substantial artistic design skills that has since helped him to become what he is today: a prolific and prominent painter, both in Ghana and now moreso across continents.

Bernard has been able to paint since he was a young child. He used to harness his imagination to create images in his mind's eye. He creates to portray how he visualises the natural world and believes that creativity is a form of religion.

Bernard's family are the centre of his life. He is one of three children. His Mother is a trader and has always been very encouraging by providing him with
all the materials he ever needed to create his paintings. Bernard believes that his family are his greatest inspiration.

Bernard also gains inspiration from the satisfaction he derives after a reflective period; when he explores positive ways of enhancing his work. To the praise of his viewers, he translates reality into illusion and vice versa through the power of his artwork. He generally uses canvas and acrylic paints in
all the work that he does. Asked why, Mensah replies "I like working with acrylic because it suits my type of painting; I like innovation in my works because it gives me different opinions every time and my sense of colouring also adds great character to the paintings."
