African Batik Zebras Ethnic Tribal Fabric Dye Print

Description: An excellent abstract, batik on artist's fabric, signed "Ghitani Njoroge", and dated 1970s. - approx 14 X 26 inches (35.56 X 66.04cm). This is an excellent African School batik dating from the late 20th Century period. The abstract depicts a fabulous example of African Modern Batik Art. Batik is an ancient traditional way of creating images by applying dye and wax to cotton. This vibrant piece of ethnic art is set on a mottled red ground, the colours of the two zebras 'reversed' having black bodies and mottle white stripes. There is a label verso which reads "Kenya Artists have adapted the rather stylized use of the batik to a pictorial form. They portray the life, tribes and animals about them. The use of wax and liquid dye is a resist process and produces its own special effects. This batik is by local artist "Ghitani Njoroge"".
