The ACOUSTIC MUSIC PROJECT is a collective of San Francisco musicians and individuals working together to document and promote the local new acoustic music scene, while at the same time generating funds for the AIDS "meals on wheels" organization, Project Open Hand. Each of the artists included have generoulsy donated their time, talent and royalties to this project. ACOUSTIC MUSIC PROJECT is an exquisite 21-track compilation of acoustic songs by San Francisco-area artists that was released to benefit a local AIDS charity. It's also a textbook example of the right way to do a benefit CD. The first 10 tracks were recorded live in concert and include spare, intimate tracks like Penelope Houston's moody "On Borrowed Time" and the Muskrats' goofy "Hootenanny." There are also strange and brilliant songs by Alex Chilton and Jonathan Segel, and an acoustic version of Translator's classic "Everywhere That I'm Not" by three-quarters of that band. Tracks 11 through 21 feature more polished studio recordings including Sonya Hunter's gorgeous and hypnotic "Paint," Barbara Manning's surging "Don't Rewind," a beautiful ballad by American Music Club, and the Sneetches' heartbreaking cover of Fred Neil's "Everybody's Talking." The CD ends with an unlisted live recording of Chilton's hilarious, X-rated "No Sex." Acoustic Music Project is one of the finest compilations of the '90s.
