DETAILS: (Paris): Felix Alcan, 1888. First edition. Part leather with marbled boards. 343pp. Illustrated with frontispiece, colour and b/w plates, fold out facsimiles, b/w text illustrations and plans. The text is in French. 8vo (standard sized book).

CONDITION: Very Good to Good (see table below for details). Some edge wear and slight rubbing to boards. Slight foxing to pages throughout. Previous owner's bookplate to endpaper. The binding is sound. This is a well preserved copy. *Photo(s) given of actual book.

CONTENTS: This is a scarce and very handsome copy of this history of the French Academy of Sciences. This is a very well illustrated copy with 8 plates (4 folding), 53 engravings, portraits, plans and autographs reproduced according to original documents. Of particular interest is the facsimile of the 1st attendance sheet signed by Bonaparte the day following his nomination at the institute. The chapters include: The Creation of the Academy (La Varenne de Louvre; La Salle de Henri II); The foundation of the National Institute (Premier Seance 15 frimaire; Discours de Daunou); Bonaparte as a member of the National Institute (Lettre du Cuvier; Les titres de Bonaparte) and much more. "The French Academy of Sciences (Académie des sciences) is a learned society, founded in 1666 by Louis XIV at the suggestion of Jean-Baptiste Colbert, to encourage and protect the spirit of French scientific research. It was at the forefront of scientific developments in Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries." Source Wikipedia
