Well, well, what have we here? An ultra-rare sight that was once a common-place vehicle back in the seventies and eighties. This is an Austin-Morris Sherpa 250 van deluxe. Yes, that’s right it hails from the era when these versatile workhorses were badged as Austin-Morris, and it’s a real, honest old gem of a find. I love classic commercials of all shapes and sizes, but we ought not to overlook these loveable larger load carriers just because the smaller (and much more expensive!) vans and pick-ups are so popular these days.
For starters, this is a one-ton van and as such would be a real worker for someone. As ever with commercials of course, the advertising and promotional prospects are enormous, and this would look a real period picture were it to be sign-written. I think it’s very “Sweeney” and would make someone a cracking business vehicle. It’s a welcome change from a Transit and is a great driver with its 1700cc petrol engine that has little more than 40,000 on the clock from new.
The side panels are incredibly straight and, for a van that still does look big by today’s standards, it has a deceivingly large payload area! There are a few patches of surface rust – and I mean surface – on the actual roof which is otherwise perfect. However you need to be over 6ft tall in the first place to even know that! The MoT runs out in December and, if the buyer wishes, I will have it tested at his or her expense. That way, it enables me to keep my asking price down since, as ever, I operate on the principle of quick turnaround and small margin. By the way, there's the almost inevitable split in the side of the driver's vinyl seat, just were you step in. Thanks for reading. Martin (07595-020282)
