About Thai Silk
What is Thai silk? Silk is the natural filament produced by the salivary glands of silkworms which are a type of moth that feeds on the mulberry bush. Silkworms are caterpillars, not worms. They spin their cocoons using a complex set of mechanisms within their bodies when they change from larva in to pupa. Thai silk is produced by Thai caterpillars raised on Thai mulberry leaves by Thai weavers in Thailand. The silk from Thailand 's caterpillars varies in color from light gold to very light green.
Identification: Since traditional Thai silk is hand woven, each silk fabric is unique and cannot be duplicated through commercial means. In contrast, artificial silk is machine woven, which means that every part of the fabric is identical and has the same color.
In addition, Thai silk has a unique luster, with a sheen that has two unique blends: one color for the warp and another for the weft. Color changes as you hold the Thai silk fabric at varying angles against light.
Moreover, Thai silk smells like hair when burned, a testament to the natural fiber that comes from the silk worm, which is similar to the fiber of human hair and fingernails. If you move the flame, Thai silk immediately stops burning. On the other hand, artificial silk smells like plastic when burned. In terms of price, Thai silk is usually 10 times more expensive than artificial silk.

What is Dupioni silk? Dupioni is an interesting textured silk fabric. One way Thai weavers create this popular weave is by mixing silk from both long, smooth, white cocoons and short, rough, yellow cocoons. Thai weavers do not use this term. They instead refer to the fabric as “not smooth”. We now categorize weaves locally referred to as rough, nubby, coarse and not smooth as “Thai Dupioni”. Dupioni is also refers to the type of yarn used to make this irregular weave “slub” texture fabric with currently so popular with designers of luxury apparel & bridal gowns.
