ANTIQUE/VINTAGE CHRISTENING GOWN,GORGEOUS WHITEWORK

Beautiful antique/vintage christening gown in fine cotton lawn with gorgeous lace and superb hand embroidered whitework. Beautiful little double layer sleeves with the same exquisite embroidery.

The bodice has inserts of hand embroidered whitework with feather stitching in between and round the waist. The bodice is unusual in that it looks as if the gown has a little jacket but the 'extra' material is just sewn into sides and sleeves of gown which I think looks delightful.This also has an insert of whitework embroidery and edged in a lovely scalloped enbroidered lace.

The skirt of the gown has rows and rows of tiny pin tucks with inserts of hand embroidered whitework and feather stitching in between. The robings either side of the are fine cotton lawn with embroidery and a pretty scalloped edge with the same going all round hem of skirt.

The gown fastens at back with ties at neck edge and waist so is adjustable to fit. There is also the tiniest button about 1" from neck edge just on the feather stitching.The back of the bodice has the same whitework embroidery inserts and scalloped trim as on the front.

There is a little bit of thinning on some of the embroidered inserts,not on the embroidery itself,but on the lawn material, a slight tear on one of the robings due to thinning (see photo),also one on hem at back, and a few tiny holes on the back of the skirt. This is all commesurate with age and does not detract from the beauty of the gown.

Length from top of shoulder to hem 44"/112cm, chest 20"/51cm, waist 20"/51cm, circumference of skirt 82"/208cm.
