ANTIQUE SHELL TAPE MEASURE ~measuring tape

An antique novelty tape measure, cleverly made from a sea shell. It has been drilled & a metal spindle added, with a tiny bone handle to wind the tape back in. I wonder if this was made as a souvenir to be sold at the sea-side...

The tape itself is somewhat fragile & probably not suited to everday use now. There is a hairline crack on the base of the shell but this is quite stable & doesn't feel like it's about to get worse (I think the picture makes it look worse than it is). It's a charming thing, I guess Victorian in era. Approx 7cm long, or 2 3/4"
