ANTIQUE Harbour Masters Telescope & Tripod C1840.
This superb Victorian brass Refractor marine Telescope & Tripod stand is signed in script
Gilbert Fleming 498 New Oxford St London & no 538, On the top of the stand.
The Telescope is a three draw mahogany barrelled marine scope with small slides to cover both the objective lens & the viewing lens. It also has a sun-shade & coarse focusing . The telescope measures 94cm when extended & 49.5cm closed, The objective lens is 6cm in diameter & has some slight chipping around the very edge this does not effect the view. The optics are good and the patina on the telescope is original.
The stand is very high quality, made of brass & oak. It has adjustable legs that when fully extended, measure 145cm, making the stand over 5ft tall. It can be folded down to 82cm (very handy when transporting or posting) The stand is in excellent condition.
This is not a reproduction. Both the stand and telescope date from 1840-1860 and would appeal to both serious collectors of marine or Scientific instruments .
