GEORGIAN MAHOGANY BUREAU

Lovely antique mahogany bureau with fall front writing surface with fully locking working original key, fitted stepped interior with rage of drawers, secret compartments, cupboards and pigeonholes - please see close up photos.  central cupboard is flanked by two columns which are secret letter drawers.  Inside the cupboard is a tiny hidden extra drawer right at the top.  Please see bottom internal photos. The writing surface has a blue leather insert and deep well with slide top that can be opened and shut with a finger pull.

Six full depth drawers.  Two small top drawers double up as lopers and are on the outer edges on either side of the internal well. Beneath these are two half width drawers over two full width graduated drawers.  All are well constructed with hand made dovetail joints.  The cabinet maker's original scribe guide marks are clearly visible.  All slide fully in and out.

The bureau stands on shaped bracket feet. The top would have originally had a top bookcase - this has long gone judging from the highly polished surface.

The mahogany has a beautiful rich colour and patina and is covered with scuffs scratches and marks and old repairs as would be expected for such an old bureau.  Please see the many close up detailed photos. This is mentioned for accuracy and does not detract from the appearance of the bureau.

This lovely old bureau would have originally been a home office / work station where someone could sit by candle light and catch up with their correspondence and paperwork and afterwards stash it all away and turn the key and ignore it - 260 years later it fulfils the same function, candles les have been replaced by electric light and pens by laptops - but there's still plenty of room for a  lap top onthe s= writing surface and for it to  be stored away in the large drawers when not in use - an original antique home office suitable for modern daily use.

This unique piece would look lovely in a traditional period home or as a feature piece in a contemporary modern home - attractive and functional!

I sell antique and vintage furniture which has been loved and used, sometimes for more than 200 years.  These antique pieces have a record of their long life marked out on them in the form of marks, wear and tear, historic restoration, lifting and loss to veneer, shrinkage splits, and flexibility to joints, old worm holes, scuffs, scratches and tarnish.

This wear and tear is what gives each piece its unique appearance, its character, its patina – its individual beauty – and is what makes each piece special.

I take great care to describe and photograph as accurately and fully as possible with many large clear photos of each piece from all angles.  I bring to your attention any  flaws and anything beyond normal signs of age.  Through eBay I’ve discovered that people's taste and opinion on what constitutes highly desirable character and what constitutes damage is wildly varied and overlaps so please pay close attentions to the photos.

If you happen to prefer antiques that have no signs of age - been in dry, dark, hermetically sealed storage for several generations and never been touched or used,  but you are, by some chance, interested in some of my furniture, it will almost definitely need to be professionally, comprehensively and expensively restored by a specialist antique furniture restorer.
