For Sale:  A large ' cuisiniere ' stove from the renown Deville foundry, this is model No.491. Although it is not a full sized cook stove rather a warming or pot cooking heating stove this particular example is the largest we have ever come across. It is to be sold in ' as found ' condition.

The hotplate has a two plate cooking area with concentric rings for varying sized pots on the RH side, there is also a warming oven behind the front upper door. Most were probably used in dining rooms so were little used with most being very ornate, but we do know of families that have used these in kitchens too to add the cooking options and heating. As was usual for this type stove the decoration lavished on cuisineres rivalled any normal heating stove, perhaps as they were expected to be seen on special occasions?

The front lower opening is the ash can front panel. The next above this is a grill into the firebox. Next above is the warming oven door and above that the hotplate area under the lid. The fuel is loaded through the RH door.

The enamel is gloss mat black and very thick. For whatever reason it has been over coated with a satin black finish, not sure why as the enamel is superb. We have spent a couple of hours removing some of this coating but there is more to do, hopefully it will be a labour of love for the new owner. There are a couple enamel chips but as the stove is black they are difficult to see, the stove is enamelled on all four sides.

There are a number of minor details to be attended to, all are listed below. The stove is in general wonderful condition for it's age but as with all stoves a good service should be carried out before use, in particular re-sealing where required.

This stove is here to be sold with a start of 99p and no reserve

This stove sale is part of a much larger relocation sale which continues all this week with the first of a batch of stoves listed here on eBay. We are having to re-locate to another building within the Rayleigh complex where we hold our UK stock...  the more stoves and other stove related parts we can sell before the move the fewer we have to move!! So here are a number of bargain stoves for sale as we prefer to sell our stoves rather than move them.

From the 1 November until the 8 November we are selling 60+ ' as found ' French, Belgian and German antique stoves direct from our storage in Rayleigh, these will be at sale prices . There are around 50+ other stoves at Rayleigh which will remain at our usual prices plus a few of our own collection which are not for sale. You are very welcome to visit us at Rayleigh on any of these dates and take a stove or two away immediately. Anything at Rayleigh can be listed immediately for you on eBay with a Buy It Now if you wish, it's no problem.

Here is a detailed appraisal of the stove  -

  • enamel excellent but requires the remaining coating to be removed. Age of the stove is early 20 C.
  • grill very good condition but will not locate very easily. The grill has probably expanded a little so requires re-setting
  • grate very good condition
  • brightwork has been over coated
  • original ash can is very lightly perforated, a running repair is probably all that is required
  • hinges all operate correctly
  • fire box  and brick in good condition
  • will burn coal, coke and small logs equally well
  • superb hotplate area, possible to cook a meal on this!
  • LH hotplate disc sits slightly proud od the surface, should be machined or filed to fit
  • no damage found
  • we can supply a flue adapter to order for this stove
  • as with all our stoves we are very happy to offer service and repair advice if required

Collection from Rayleigh, SS6 9QG is always an option as is our nationwide personal delivery service, the choice is yours. The next delivery run is scheduled for the end of the second week of November. Collection is possible see below

As with our other 'as found ' stoves this one will only to be sold here at auction and is on sale from the first 99p bid as there is no reserve!!

Please remember that all our vintage and antique stoves are at least 50 years old with some more than 100 years old and should be viewed as such. Some have pitting, chips and even cracks, many may have sat in barns for the last 40 years, but it is a testament to the original manufacturers and the subsequent care taken with them that they survive today.
