Please see my 'About me' page for a photograph of Madame Palla herself and her shop!
If you read my auctions regularly you will know that I have been emptying the attic of a large bourgeoise holiday home which had belonged to a Parisian family for generations. When World War II broke out the family returned to Paris - and their house by the sea remained closed and shuttered.
Whilst looking through boxes from the attic I came across a large brown paper parcel tied securely with string and with the date 1898 hand-written on the outside. I could hardly bear to cut the string and open the package after it had been unopened for so long - but when I did I was delighted! A whole years worth of beautiful old sepia ink-written receipts from so many stores.... a corset maker, a mercerie haberdasher, candle suppliers, a shoe maker, a cafe supplier - even a hat maker.
I was told that the husband of Madame Palla often despaired at his wife`s extravagance - which is plain to see as she ordered 6 pairs of shoes at a time and endless reams of fabric & ribbons! Many of the receipts are textiles and fashion connected so, with me being a vintage textile addict, you can see why I got so excited about them! I have since discovered that Madame Palla owned a shop in Grandcamp les Bains and there are so many stunning pieces of paperwork to list.
This auction is for a letter from a textile manufacturer with a fabric sample sent to Madame Palla in 1898
This wonderful old sepia hand written letter is dated 21st Septembre 1898 and was sent to Madame Palla from the textile manufacturer "ALBERT GALLOT from "Flers de Lorne".
Measuring 11" by 8 and 1/2" (28cms x21.5cms) the letter carries a sample of a woven Vichy check . It would seem that Madame Palla had not been "entirely satisfied" with the quality of a previous Vichy supplied - and an alternative was being offered instead. The letter states that if she had cut the previous batch they regretted that they could not accept it back! I wonder if they got any more orders from Madame?!
A wonderful old piece of textile history that would be look superb framed and that would delight any antique textile addict.
