ANTIQUE FRENCH: Embroidered Window Seat or Pew/Settle Cushion

This lovely antique cushion is made from nobbly, old hemp/jute fabric (looks similar to sacking) - in French, it is called "chanvre", and decorated with embroidery in red wool.  The pattern is stylised hearts, flowers and crosses.

The condition is good for the age but there is a little loss of red wool in several places, and the underside has been replaced albeit many years ago with a printed cotton (see last photo).  The cushion is also not symetrical ie one end is slightly wider than the other - it is home-made after all - but this just adds to its charm.

I think it dates from around the middle of the 19th century - 1850 - and was probably used as a prayer kneeler as there is an ecclesiastical look to the embroidered crosses.

The background has mellowed to the most fantastic honey colour and the whole item has a wonderful homespun, homemade feel to it.

It is padded probably with woollen batting and quite heavy:

width: 16 ins/41 cms one side, 17.5/44 cms the other!
