ANTIQUE ENGLISH BOXING MEDALLION NEAT & GAS 1821  

A lovely antique Georgian English, white metal medallion, commemorating December 11, 1821, when Bill Neat fought Tom Hickman at Hungerford. Hickman's nickname was 'Gas Light Man' or 'Gas'. This memorable bare-knuckle fight went on for eighteen rounds.
Obverse: Two prize fighters facing each other with fists up. Legend: THE GOOD OLD ENGLISH CUSTOM OF DECIDING A QUARREL. Reverse: A lion in a square, surrounded by scenes illustrating various sports - horse racing, dog fighting, cock fighting and bull baiting. Legend: THE SPORTSMANS DELIGHT: BLOOD . BONE . ACTION AND GAME.

An unusual and scarce medal - very collectable!

CONDITION: All original and very good. Some scratches / signs of wear commensurate with age and use. Drill hole to top.

DEFECTS: None.

DATE/MARKS: Around 1821. Not marked.

DIMENSIONS: 40.9 mm diameter (1 inch = 25.4 mm). To give an impression of scale, the coin is 19 mm or ¾ of an inch diameter.

WEIGHT: Approx. 25.4 grams.
