This rare 1897 Waltham hunter’s dress pocket watch produced at the close of the elegant Victorian Era will bring graciousness and investment value to your finest collection!
The origInal Waltham signed white enamel dial is in extra fine, nearly mint condition and with that traditional crisp appearance that you love! His original royal blue hands accurately display the passing time to sleek black Roman numerals, and to the neat line style minute markers in the outer chapter. You will read the time down to the precise second in the single sunk auxiliary dial, where the original matching blue sub-second efficiently shows the passing seconds to its own crisp markers. The dial is free of hairlines, a truly fabulous discovery for the most discerning collector! This dial is beautiful in its classic simplicity and perfect for a quick and bold read of the time.
You will be equally impressed with the lavishly engraved Gold Filled hunters’ case! You will delight in the beautifully rendered flowers, leaves and flourishes! A fancy oval shaped open shield with fleur de lis accents on the front awaits the personalized touch of your engraved initials- what a magnificent heirloom piece or special holiday gift this will make! The edges have a fancy bead style design. The case is in excellent condition, with a satiny finish and rich yellow gold fill. The case is in excellent condition with only the faintest touch of use- beautifully preserved and now ready for you to show off! There are a few tool marks on the protective inner dust cover and a few very light surface scratches on the exterior but the case is free of brass. The dust cover bears the original owner’s monogram “N.L.M”. Inside the case, the high quality Waltham ¾ split nickel plate movement is very clean and running strong! The ornate damasked plates are stamped with the serial #8340879, placing the year of production at 1897. A Brief History of the American Railroad Pocket Watch
THE DISASTER THAT CHANGED TIME:
On April 19, 1891, a great train disaster occurred that would forever change railroad timekeeping. On the tracks, not far from Cleveland, the scheduled No. 4 was traveling East on the same track as another train that was heading West. Two trains collided, eleven people died. It was found that the cause was a Railroad engineers faulty timepiece.
Unfortunately the engineer’s pocket watch on the westbound train had stopped for about 4 minutes, and then started up again. The two trains met their fate at Kipton, Ohio. Both of the engineers were instantly killed, and nine other people lost their lives. The loss to the Rail line and the Postal Service was great.
Following this disaster, a commission was appointed to establish and develop the General Railroad Timepiece Standards. These standards were adopted in 1893 and the Railroad Pocket Watch industry was born.
Every Railroad watch produced is a technological marvel, each designed with pure function and unmatched accuracy in mind. The bold black Arabic numerals set on pristine white porcelain set the standard for the distinguished railroad time-piece while numerous safety features were incorporated displaying the ingenuity to which they were designed.
Webb C. Ball was instrumental is establishing the design guidelines and set the method of watch inspections that all railroad watches had to follow. Watches with the ball name are some of the most desired watches produced.
The accepted general guide lines (approximately 1930s) for a certified Rail Road watches included:
The pocket watch had to be a 16 size, open face, lever set, stem wound model. The watch movement had to have a minimum of 19 Jewels, Double roller, at least five positions, temperature and isochronism. The approved watches would be accurate to within 30 seconds per week.
Remember that railroad approved rules evolved and changed from year to year and that some of the earlier watches having fewer jewels or adjustments are to be considered genuine Rail Road watches.
