SAXON SWORD MOUNT , EXCEPTIONALLY RARE TYPE
Circa 600 - 700 UK. A UNIQUE SAXON SWORD MOUNT IN ABSOLUTELY SUPERB CONDITION.
This mount is circular in design with four facets chip carved into the side with rare designs.
facet 1 depicts a chip carved saxon male woden type head wearing a helmet.
facet 2 has several designs chip carved.
facet 3 is a chip carved saxon female face.
facet 4 is a reciprical of facet 2 design.
The top also has a chip carved circle with 4 proud dots in it.
There is also an integral mounting bar across the underneath of the item.
The item is solidly constructed of good silver , and is 69% covered in very heavy gold gilding.
The dimensions are 14mm across the bottom of the item and the height is 7/8mm, weight is 2.7 grms
Provenance , found 1968 in the thetford area of norfolk uk.
Aquired as part of a collection by myself in 1970, and now for sale.
The standard type for these sword mounts is normally pyramid style , with animal and interlace motifs , sometimes with inlaid garnets.
After considerable research through all available records, i have been unable to find anything that even closely matches this item , especially with chip carved saxon woden type faces.
This is a very rare item and is unique in its style and design , an absolutely beautiful rare saxon piece , to add to a collection.
This item is also absolutely authentic in every way.
