AMERICA GOES OVER 1918 - 63 Mins On One "NO FRILLS" DVD* ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is a silent film in 5 reels, no soundtrack or music. Produced by the US Army Signal Corps to document the US involvment in World War One. Extremely rare footage showing all aspects of the conflict from the trenches and the massive artillary barrages, to the air war, with marvelous dog-fight footage, to the lighter side of the war (if such a thing can be imagined) with behind-the-lines morale boosting shows by the troops (including a drag show) and company mascots (including a lion in one case!). Edited from films shot by the Signal Corps, this film covers the entire scope of U.S. operations in World War I. Includes scenes of President Woodrow Wilson, General Jack Pershing, recruitment and training of soldiers, major land battles, naval and aerial operations, everyday life of the soldier, and the liberation of Paris. Originally produced in 1918 by the U.S. Signal Corps. Anyone interested in military and film history would find this DVD absolutely fascinating. A very rare find indeed.
(From www.wikipedia.com) America Goes Over was a documentary propaganda film produced by the US Army Signal Corp in 1918, documenting the activities of the American Expeditionary Forces in World War I under General Pershing. SynopsisThe film opens with footage of the war prior to America's entry, and in many areas where the US wasn't even involved, such as the Italian front and the conquest of Palestine. Once these are establish the lead up to Americas entry is covered with President Wilson warning the Germans about unrestricted submarine warfare. From that point on the film takes us to the front line of the Western front during the final months of the Great War. In between the usual combat footage, which is considerable, there are many "human interest" clips about doughboys on KP, slop buckets, digging trenches, even one of their lion mascot. Those shots are accompanied by a still cartoon soldier resembling Private SNAFU. The combat footage, which includes some graphic scenes of the dead and wounded, is accompanied by animated maps of the front, and the gradual inching toward Germany. This DVD is encoded in the PAL (UK) video format. If you live in the USA or other countries that use the NTSC video system please check your systems equiptment is compatible before ordering.
