Reviews Review A staggering surprise success at the box office just before Christmas 2007, the reason for the popularity of Alvin and the Chipmunks soon becomes clear. Not only is it a new adventure for a popular set of characters of old, its also a fun, breezy family movie, that the kids in particular will enjoy. Starring Jason Lee (of My Name Is Earl fame), Alvin and the Chipmunks mixes in live action and CGI chipmunks (Alvin, Simon and Theodore) in a story that sees that moved from their natural habitat into the midst of the big city. The plot then becomes as predictable as youd expect, but theres still plenty of fun to be had anyway. For Alvin and the Chipmunks has plenty in its corner. Its funny, first and foremost, and moves along at a good pace, never forgetting that its prime job is to entertain its audience. And thats something it easily manages to do, wrapping everything up by remembering not to outstay its welcome, either. Considering that Alvin and the Chipmunks enjoy a legion of fans that stretch back decades, its perhaps not a surprise after all that the film enjoyed the success it did. But whats pleasing is that the spirit of the source material, in spite of its contemporary setting, is adhered to, and theres fun for all in the end product. --Jon Foster

CHIPMUNKS ON BLU RAY.. This is a great family movie with plenty of humour for the adults and you got 3 chipmunks singing which is brillant. The picture quality is very good and the sound again is good I don't think there is a great deal of difference between the blu ray version and a up scale version of the normal DVD. If you haven't seen this film and are thinking of buying it it might be wise to save money and go for the standard DVD version with a good DVD player with up scale it will do the same job as the blu ray version.
Wonderful heartwarming movie I bought this movie for my 2 girls aged 2yrs & 4yrs having read the reviews already posted on Amazon and it absolutely deserves the 5 star rating. It was lovely to have a movie with no 'mildly frightening scenes' like many other kids movies as my two find them terrifying. The chipmunks are adorable, the singing is cute, the storyline is simple yet engaging and we've watched it every day since we got it with no signs of tiring of it! Oh, and my husband thinks the blu-ray format is fab, whatever that means!
An Adorable Movie Alvin & The Chipmunks is one of those shows that you remember with fondness from your childhood and thanks to corporate money grabbing, the movie executives decided it was a good idea to take your childhood and update it. I was skeptical at first, I thought this would just be another one of those movies that takes a classic cartoon series like Garfield or The Flintstones and makes a feature length movie using either Live action, CGI or both. Because of this I kept away from this film as long as I could but after resisting temptation for so long, I had to give in and at least give it a try, needless to say I wasn't disappointed. For this review I will discuss both the pros and cons of this movie to give you a fair and honest view of the film to give you an informed decision.
Pro: Jason Lee: Most people will know him from the hit comedy series My Name Is Earl and with these people that will have been the only reason they will have given this film a chance. He's a great comic actor and someone that you just look at and smile because of his natural charisma and ease at which he plays the beaten, yet optimistic Dave Seville. He is a bit cringeworthy when doing the whole ALVIN!!!! thing as, although it's a part of the classic series, in todays setting it just doesn't fit. Either way though Jason Lee was one of the primary reasons why I enjoyed the film like I did
Con: The CGI: I know if you wanted to make a live action version of Alvin and the Chipmunks the use of CGI would be inevitable. The problem I have with it though, is that the CGI animations are quite sub-par and by todays standards should have been much better. At times with the CGI being a bit unrealistic it took a big element out of the film and in a way destroyed the fantasy element of the whole thing.
Pro: The Music: Obviously the whole premise of Alvin and the Chipmunks being that they're singing Chipmunks, the introduction of music would be inevitable. From the get go we're introduced to the classic high pitched yet melodic singing of the gang and the voices just make you think that the whole thing is adorable. Being voiced by Justin Long, Jesse McCartney & Matthew Gray Gubler the singing is an even bigger surprise as it does present a feel of genuine harmony between the three.
Con: The plot wasn't great. Of course it's a kids movie and being so it has to contain a sort of light hearted predictability, and you have to give the viewers something to get into and surely you would come to anticipate the success of the Chipmunks if they're managed by a heartless, money driven manager, Ian played by David Cross. I just found the whole plot bland and a bit too predictable.
Overall I found the movie to be quite enjoyable, with some hearty laughs and the presenting of such a sweet atmosphere. I found myself really caring for the Chipmunks and aside from their hearty musical talent, you develop a fondness for them that will ensure you watch this film to the end. I would recommend it to any fans of the classic cartoon or of Jason Lee as he's a genuine big plus.
Hillarious movie for the whole family I watched this movie with my kids with some trepidation. I almost passed it by in the shop because I just thought "Oh no. Chip 'n Dale!" but both kids put their foot down and I was forced into a purchase :) I need not have worried for this is a film full of fun for adults and children alike. A thoroughly enjoyable time which found all of us laughing out loud from start to finish!
Fantastic picture quality on this Blu-Ray version and great 5.1 DTS HD Master audio fills the room with the music.
I can't wait for the second showing next weekend :)
DVDs contain Regional Codes which can
be used to prevent the playback of certain discs depending upon the geographical
area it is played in. The various studios and home video companies lobbied to make
sure this coding system was a required part of the current DVD standards, because
they wish to control how their DVD titles are exported to other countries. (For
example, while a recent film may already have played theatrically in the United
States and been released to the home video market, that same film may not yet have
opened in some European or Asian countries.) In most instances, discs manufactured
in one region will usually only play on players that were manufactured for that
same region - this means that discs bought or imported from Japan will not play
on U.S. players, and vice versa.
Some DVDs, however, are coded for Region 0 - which means they will play in any of
the six regular regions. There are also DVD players that don't check the region
coding of the DVD so will play any disc from any region - these are generally referred
to as Code Free players or Multi Region DVD Players.
