A Rare Set of Original Wood Cut / Ink Drawings on Thick Card of Alice in Wonderland { Possibly } by Sir John Tenniel. circa 1880 -1900s. Contemporary to the original book, original Turn of the Century Frame and Mount, 3 Pictures in all, Comprising three of Tenniel's best loved illustrations. Entitled, Alice & the Frog, Of Manners & Lesson's, " i feel faint - give me a sandwich" illustrations from Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll 1832 - 98 first published 1871 a painting by Sir John Tenniel 1820 - 1914. all three have inscriptions on the rear of each as shown in the pictures, to add to the rarity there is a pencil sketch to the rear of one which would require further investigation by the purchaser. in Excellent Condition, very slight foxing. These does not come to the market, this item is in a super condition, so buy with Confidence at Manchester Retro.
Sir John Tenniel's illustrations for Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass are considered to be his finest. They must also rank among the world's best-known children's images.
The Dalziel brothers were commissioned to engrave the boxwood blocks on which Tenniel had made his drawings. The engravers advised Lewis Carroll that the engraved blocks should not be used for printing the illustrations in the books but instead they would act as the masters from which electrotype copies would be made. It was from these electrotypes that all the illustrations in the Alice books were printed with a resultant loss of definition.
