New Jack, Armani Style!!!, June 24, 2005
By  M. Ybarra "yogi #2" - See all my reviews

Al B Sure is one of those artists who didn't get the recognition he deserved for this cd. To Me, this was the cd that should have gotten all the accolades.

Personal Favorites:

"So Special"
"I Want To Know"
"Just for The Moment"
"You Excite Me"

This was the cd that I used to get me through the first gulf war, the one I always had on when I had a lady who appreciated a GOOD Slow Jam. This cd has been off and on in my cd player since it was released. Believe me, there are TIMELESS slow jams on this cd.

Don't get caught up in the Hype of "In Effect Mode"....THIS is the cd that defines Al B.

Unless he blesses us with the release of his highly anticipated new cd.....

The Second Time's The Charm, August 23, 2004
By  Latoshia Fields (Fort Worth, Texas USA) - See all my reviews

Well actually it really goes "the third time's the charm", but since I ain't really feeling Al's third album I got to give it up for "Private Times". I really liked this album. It's good, IMO it's better than "In Effect Mode". Don't get me wrong I really like that cd, but I like this one better. (Uh oh, I know someone is going to disagree with me. Oh well.) Anyway my favortie song is "Hotel California". It's a tight song. I also like "I Want To Know". This is a great buy for old Al B Sure fans as well as new ones (like me). pz

Not much to it, February 19, 2004
By A Customer

Al B. Sure's sophmore album did not live up expectations put forth after his first album. I hate to give anything by Al B. Sure a low rating, but this isn't a great album, and he proved in his first CD that he has the ability to do much better.
I was also disspointed that the mix of "Misunderstanding" that I heard on the radio was not what was on this CD. This happens a lot these days, and it was the only reason I bought "Private Times & the Whole 9".

Al B. Sure's rendition of "Hotel California" is worth a listen. If you are already a fan of Al B. Sure, you will appreciate it, however those unfamiliar with his style might be turned off.

 A good albu, September 19, 2003
By  Kboogie "lilnicole2003" (Denver, Colorado) - See all my reviews

This album is a very good album. Like the others said he hit big with his first hit "Nite and Day;" and then with the release of his debut album 1988's "In Effect Mode" fyi sold two million copies. Anyway, this album is a transition; but it's a very good album. I slept on this album for many years; due to the fact that I was only nine years old in 1990. Moreover, now that i'm grown I just found this album and am falling in love with it! I do remember "In Effect Mode," because my sister use to play the hell out of that album; but this album is just as good as that album.
With slow jams like "So Special," "Touch You" and fast cuts like "Missunderstanding," this album will be sure to take you back when music was actually music. Not like today, where Justin Timberlake can't even play a keyboard.

In conclusion, the album is off the hook.

Stated perfectly. I am actually frightened by the fact that Kelly Clarkson's album is about to be released. I will be sure to NOT listen to any pop music stations for the next 6 months. As a matter of fact, I think I'll just stop entirely. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews

American Idol competitors, take note!, March 14, 2003
By  Reginald D. Garrard "the G-man" (Camilla, GA USA) - See all my reviews

It's too bad that fame is indeed fleeting in the pop music world. Too many artists score big with their first release and fade into obscurity by their second or, if they're lucky, third album.
Al B. Sure! is one of those that star only shone brightly for a short period. He hit the music world in a big way with his freshman album from 1988 "In Effect Mode" which had a monster smash with "Nite and Day", a New Jack swing tune that seemed to stay on the radio forever. Because of the overwhelming success of his first-time out, the artist returned two years later with the mammoth-in-length "Private Nine".

Exploring some of the same themes as in the first one, Al's voice was never more seductive and his lyrics were no less alluring. He even tried his had at remaking a classic in his soulful reworking of The Eagle's "Hotel California", the first cut and the obvious highlight of the entire release.

While this is not a superior recording, it does stand as a reminder of that transitional R & B period between what music was and what it IS today. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Al B. Sure's second album pretty much picks up where the first left off, providing plenty of new jack funk and urban slow cookers. There's not much personality here, however. Al and his crew seem determined to stick to formula, which ultimately fails to generate much heat. That means some decent songs (specifically, "Misunderstanding," "Had Enuff?," and a silky duet with Diana Ross, "No Matter What") get lost in the mix.

BIOGRAPHIES-

During the late '80s, Al B. Sure! enjoyed a brief run as one of new jack swing's most popular romantic singers. Born Al Brown in Boston, he grew up in Mount Vernon, NY, listening to smooth crooners like Marvin Gaye and Johnny Mathis; he later became interested in rap and added that skill to his vocal repertoire. At age ten, he and a friend performed on a song written by Ellie Greenwich for the soundtrack of Sesame Street, and later he began writing songs with his cousin Kyle West. While in high school (where he quarterbacked the football team), he became friends with Edward Ferrell, aka DJ Eddie F, who was working with rapper Heavy D at the time. Eddie F introduced the still-teenaged Al B. Sure! to Heavy D's manager/Uptown label head Andre Harrell, who had him sing backing vocals on several Heavy D tracks and helped him get a deal with Warner Brothers. Featuring production from DJ Eddie F and a number of co-writes with West, Al B. Sure!'s debut album, In Effect Mode, was released in 1988 and became a platinum-selling sensation thanks to the single "Nite and Day," which reached the Top Ten on the pop charts and topped the R&B charts for three weeks. The follow-up, "Off on Your Own (Girl)," was also a number one R&B hit, and he became a bona fide star among urban audiences, though he didn't remain a presence on the pop charts. His second album, Private Times...and the Whole 9, appeared in 1990 and produced another R&B number one in "Misunderstanding," as well as a duet with Diana Ross called "No Matter What." His third album, 1992's Sexy Versus, wasn't as successful, and he took a hiatus from recording, eventually landing a vice president position at Motown. In 1996, he survived a potentially nasty car accident in New York, and in 2002, he began hosting a quiet storm-style radio show in the San Francisco Bay Area. Signed to the Hidden Beach label, he finally returned with Honey I'm Home, his first album in 17 years, in 2009.
