 L'Akai Professional MPC500 è il primo Music Production Center all-in-one portatile. Grazie all'alimentazione a batterie e all'uscita cuffie, consente ai produttori di preparare e realizzare le proprie basi, i propri groove anche in viaggio e di campionare al volo i propri samples. Ottimo quindi per chi possiede un archivio di supporti musicali (in vinile o CD) lontano dallo studio. La compatibilità con gli altri strumenti della famiglia MPC ne fa un punto di forza per chi, già possessore dei modelli superiori, è spesso in viaggio e necessita di una postazione mobile per la pre-produzione. Offre molte delle caratteristiche del fratello maggiore MPC1000, con cui è compatibile per quanto riguarda Sequenze (SEQ), .Wav e Program (PGM) e garantisce la compatibilità con i seguenti modelli AKAI: MPC2000 e XL (SEQ, WAV, SND, PGM), MPC2500 (SEQ, WAV, PGM), MPC4000 e Z4/Z8 (SEQ, WAV, DRUM PGM). MPC3000 e S5000/6000 compatibilità WAV/SND via computer. Grazie alle sezioni di campionamento, sequencer e ai 2 multieffetti interni rappresenta lo strumento adeguato per produrre velocemente delle basi, per l'uso come "spara-jingle" e per la riproduzione di effetti e samples negli spettacoli live e nelle regie mobili, oppure come piattaforma per la riproduzione di basi nei DJ-Set, nelle performance Hip-Hop e nel Turntablism. La RAM, che di base è di 16MB (circa 136 secondi di campionamento mono), può essere espansa a 128MB (oltre 24 minuti in mono) utilizzando il kit AKAIPRO EXM128. Lo slot Compact Flash permette di caricare, salvare e di esportare ciò che si è creato su altre MPC500, oppure sui modelli superiori come l'MPC1000 e l'MPC2500. La polifonia massima è di 32 note (dipendente dalle funzioni di processing in uso). La presenza della porta USB consente inoltre di collegarsi al computer per importare ed esportare i campioni (.Wav) e le sequenze MIDI.
