HUEY COBRA

The Bell AH-1 Cobra, called the "Huey Cobra", "Cobra" or "Sea Cobra" (depending on the model), is an attack helicopter designed by Bell Helicopter Textron. It shares a common engine, transmission & rotors with the UH-1 Huey for which it was developed as a heavy firepower escort. Bell built 1,116 AH-1Gs for the US Army between 1967 and 1973, and Cobras chalked up over a million operational hours in Vietnam. The Cobra has simpler maintenance than the Apache, & takes up less space on a ship; the main reasons it remains in service with the US Marine Corps. It's main use is against armour. The Cobra's narrow front gives it a defensive advantage making it harder to hit. The AH-1 Cobras were in use during Tet offensive in 1968 and extensively by the Army through the end of the Vietnam War. During the 1983 invasion of Grenada, Huey Cobras supported US Marine operations on the island. During Operation Desert Storm, Cobras and SeaCobras deployed in a support role. Approximately 78 Marine Cobras flew 1,273 sorties with one non-combat loss. Cobra helicopter gunships were also used widely by the Israeli Air Force in Operation Peace for Galilee to destroy Syrian armor and fortification. IAF Cobras destroyed dozens of Syrian AFV's, including modern Soviet T72 MBT's. AH-1 Cobras continue to operate with the US military, most notably in Iraq. The Israeli Air Force also operates the Cobra as the Tzefa. The AH-1T is an improved version of the twin engined Sea Cobra.
