This book will be made by hand by Samantha and Jason at Earthworks. We are a small, two person business and we have been making individually crafted items together for over a decade. When you buy this book we will be making it especially for you!
Bound in a single thick piece of vegetable tanned leather this journal has our hand tooled Moon Goddess design on the cover. Traditional hand tooling gives a much deeper and longer lasting impression, with more texture and detail, than the machine pressed images that you find on most mass produced leather journals. Once we are happy with the design and the way the journal looks we give it a beautiful antiqued finish that picks out the design and the natural markings in the leather.
The Goddess represents the divine feminine in the landscape. She can be depicted as a maiden, mother or crone, the three aspects of woman. These aspects are often represented by the three phases of the moon, waxing, full and waning, which we have incorporated into our design. Her arms are raised to form an unbroken circle representing the eternal cycle of nature. In many cultures the Goddess is associated with nature, fertility and the harvest. Woodland groves, springs and streams are particularly sacred to her.
It is 24.5cm x 17.5cm x 3cm (9.75 x 7 x 1.25 inches) and contains approximately 250 pages (500 sides) of A5 sized, unlined, recycled, paper. The paper can be replaced easily with any A5 pre-punched paper, it is held in place by a cord that fastens at the back of the book. The covers are fastened with cords finished with leather beads.
This is a binder style book which has the benefit of having removable pages. It is also available as a permanently bound book which has the benefit of laying flat when opened. If you would prefer a permanently bound book then let us know on ordering.
The paper that we use is a natural, off-white, oatmeal colour with faint flecks. It has a matt appearance and is slightly textured. It takes a fountain pen without 'bleeding' and is a good mid-tone for sketching.
We're proud to say that our paper is 100% recycled from unbleached post-consumer waste, which saves water, energy and trees. It has won awards for it's high environmental standards and is endorsed by Greenpeace. Best of all it's a great paper of archival quality which means that it will last for hundreds of years. This is great if you're planning on leaving your words for future generations!
It makes a wonderful journal; diary; sketchbook; book of shadows etc.
This is the earthy alternative to the mass produced books generally available and makes a unique gift.
As leather is a natural material the tone and grain of each journal may vary from the image shown, but not too much!
