This book will be made by hand by Samantha and Jason at Earthworks. We are a small, two person business and we have been making individually crafted items together for over a decade. When you buy this book we will be making it especially for you!

Bound in a single thick piece of vegetable tanned leather this journal has our hand tooled Green Man design on the cover. Traditional hand tooling gives a much deeper and longer lasting impression, with more texture and detail, than the machine pressed images that you find on most mass produced leather journals. Once we are happy with the design and the way the journal looks we give it a beautiful antiqued finish that picks out the design and the natural markings in the leather.

The Green Man never goes away, he has probably been with us since the dawn of humankind. He is the spirit of the forest, he represents that part of man that never left the primeval wildwood. In Celtic Europe he can still be found in church carvings. This powerful archetype has many decendants; Robin Hood; Merlin; Cernunnos; Herne the Hunter; Jack-in-the-Green and The Woodwose.

It is 32cm x 23cm x 3.5cm (12.5 x 9 x 1.5 inches) and contains approximately 250 pages (500 sides) of A4 sized, unlined, recycled, paper. The paper can be replaced easily with any A4 pre-punched paper, it is held in place by a cord that fastens at the back of the book. The covers are fastened with cords finished with leather beads.

This is a binder style book which has the benefit of having removable pages. It is also available as a permanently bound book which has the benefit of laying flat when opened. If you would prefer a permanently bound book then let us know on ordering.

The paper that we use is a natural, off-white, oatmeal colour with faint flecks. It has a matt appearance and is slightly textured. It takes a fountain pen without 'bleeding' and is a good mid-tone for sketching.
We're proud to say that our paper is 100% recycled from unbleached post-consumer waste, which saves water, energy and trees. It has won awards for it's high environmental standards and is endorsed by Greenpeace. Best of all it's a great paper of archival quality which means that it will last for hundreds of years. This is great if you're planning on leaving your words for future generations!

It makes a wonderful journal; diary; family history book; sketchbook; book of shadows etc.

This is the earthy alternative to the mass produced books generally available and makes a unique gift.

As leather is a natural material the tone and grain of each journal may vary from the image shown, but not too much!

Personalise This Journal:

We can personalise this journal for you by hand carving initials into the leather
(maximum of three letters).
We usually put them on the back cover and this is totally free of charge,
just let us know what initials you would like on ordering.
We cannot personalise all of our journals, just the ones with this message,
not all of our leathers are suitable for tooling.
