A QUARTET OF CORNISH CATS

BY

A L ROWSE

(THE BLURB ON THE BOOK)

A.L. Rowse was born near St Austell in 1903; his father was a clay worker

and the family ran a village shop.

Despite his humble background this remarkable man won a scholarship to

Oxford and rose to become an historian of international reputation.

He was a Fellow of All Souls College and the author of over a hundred books.

He was a champion of Cornwall and all things Cornish throughout his life.

He died in 1997 leaving his estate to various charities to benefit future

generations in Cornwall.

In these four little cameos the author loving describes the pleasure and

sadness of a lifetime with cats.

His compelling honesty will evoke a rich core of sympathy with all

ardent cat lovers.

The back cover photo shows Rowse with Arthur about 1960;

the front cover illustration shows the four cats, Chalky Jenkins,

Tommer, Flip, and Peter.

Beryl the housekeeper can be seen at the window holding the telephone

for Peter to listen to his master’s voice. When he was at Oxford Rowse

would ring Peter every Monday evening at six o'clock.
