A Long Row of Candles Memoirs & Diaries 1934-1954 by C.L. Sulzberger

This book, ‘A Long Row of Candles’ is a landmark in the field of journalistic memoirs. In his distinguished career, Mr Sulzberger has witnessed more history in the making, known intimately more great and notorious figures on the international scene than any other newspaperman of his time. What brings special immediacy and freshness to his history of the years, largely in Europe, from 1934 to 1954 is that after each important encounter with the people who make news, after covering the councils where the fate of the world hung in the balance, it was C. L. Sulzberger’s custom to jot down in his diary a frank, terse, colourful summary of his impressions and private conversations. The entries range from fascinating gossip to piercing character analysis, from witty stories to profound and often prophetic views of key world situations. This is that rare volume which offers a uniquely valuable first-hand record of history in the making and at the same time engrossing and exciting reading.
