A GLOSSARY OR COLLECTION OF WORDS, PHRASES, PLACE NAMES SUPERSTITIONS CURRENT IN EAST LINCOLNSHIRE BY JABEZ GOOD, BURGH LE MARSH, LINCOLNSHIRE. Origiinally published by H. Pulford, Long Sutton c. 1900, reprinted by Old Chapel Lane Books, Burgh le Marsh, Lincolnshire, 2009, 91 pages, 4 illustations. Mr Good was born in Burgh le Marsh in 1833 and opened his barber's shop in the 1850s. He kept notes on the local dialect saying and words of the customers in his shop and eventually compiled this book. There were three editions in his lifetime and it was reprinted By Basil Major of Skegness in 1973 but since then has been out of print. It has a glossary of local words and phrases, a collection of superstitions, a table for calculating the wieght of cattle from their measurements and finally a chapter on the history of Burgh. Mr Good was a gifted wood carver and carved the eagle lectern in Burgh Church. He had a museum at his shop, which contained Oliver Cromwell's boots, He also designed the truimphal arches erected at the entrances to the village to celebrate the Coronation of King George V in 1911. He died soon after this event. |
