English, dating from the middle of the 18th century - c. 1750.
A turned and shaped ash-wood handle - the upper portion of which hand carved, forming a 'cogged', or toothed wheel - on which the clapper board acts. The handle supports the elm frame - the frame constructed with blacksmith made wrought iron nails. The frame is fitted with a fruit-wood clapper board and solid elm block, which supports the board.
This fine, very early example has retained the original museum collection label, "an old 'alarm' "Rattle" Probably made 1750 or before - " - see image 7.
Image 8, shows an old picture of a 'Bird Scarer Boy' using another form of wooden rattle.
Spinning the 'scarer' creates a very loud "rattle" - enough to see off the most stubborn of pigeons!
Overall length - 12 1/4" (310mm), overall height - 9 3/4" (248mm).
Very good, original period condition - superb natural colour and patina, lightly waxed.
