A.E. Evans Italian Lady Romantic Portrait Oil Painting

Framed - approx 16 X 14 inches (40.64 X 35.56cm).

This is an excellent English School oil dating from the Victorian period.

The portrait depicts a beautiful romanticist, almost poetic, study of a beautiful maiden, Spanish or Italian in appearance. The painting has exquisite detail, the maiden wearing a burgandy velvet dress, with gold brocade decoration, the dress worn off the shoulders, with a beautiful sheer lace blouse beneath, just showing her breasts beneath. She wears a gold cross around her neck, her sheer black vail falling on her shoulders, attached with pins to the top, her thick ebony hair tied in a bun, with a beautiful pink rose to the side. The maide's complexion is beautiful, having rosy red lips, slightly pursed, with flushed sheeks, her youthful eyes gazing down as she peers from a stone arched window above, with climbing ivy trailing to the right, the dark green mottled ground giving a wonderful mysterious mood to the painting. The painting is glazed and has been photographed from behind the glass. This is a truly beautiful piece of art, from the late 19th Century, the painting having an Italian Renaissance Romanticist influence. One wonders what she is looking at through the old arched window! A beautiful and appealing portrait painting.

The work is signed "A.E. Evans" to the lower left. The oil probably dates to around 1880 - 1900.

The work is set off by a frame of gesso work with classic scroll and floral moulded decoration, and finished in gilt. The frame is later. The oil is mounted on a stretcher. The oil is in good general condition but there are a few marks and blemishes consistent with age.The oil shows general signs of crazing, adding to character and authenticity, but appears to be stable with no signs of flaking. The later frame has been re-gilded, having a few minor chips and dings, consistent with age. The work measures - approx 16 X 14 inches (40.64 X 35.56cm) when framed. The image measurements are- approx 8 X 6 inches (20.32 X 15.24cm).
