To the Reader South Yorkshire is not entirely a region covered with coal mines and iron works for it still has many villages set in pleasant country. Yet if you make the journey from Sheffield to Leeds, either by rail or by the new motorway, you will see all around you collieries and iron and steel works, together with other industries that have grown up with them. You will also be able to see remains of old, derelict works some of which date back to the Middle Ages when monks from the abbeys of Yorkshire were mining and smelting the iron ore. As you read this book you will discover how the early mine owners and iron masters were connected with, agriculture, but as inventions and new ways of making things were introduced, they changed their methods. As the older firms faded away, so new ones took their place and what had been local industries became national ones as the result of improvements in transport. Most important of all you will see how the lives of people were affected by this change in very many ways. When you have read the book, you may be able to find out how these changes affected the area in which you live, for there are many interesting things still to be found out about industrial changes.
