A. Cardinal Antique European Townscape Watercolour

Description: An excellent original antique Victorian period townscape watercolour on artist's paper, signed "A. Cardinal" and dating circa 1870 - 1890. Framed - approx 19 X 14 inches (48.26 X 35.56cm). This is an excellent English School watercolour dating from the Victorian period. The townscape depicts a fabulous late 19th Century "Grand Tour" classic figural European street scene, probably in France. Beautifully painted, a fabulous architectural building with a fine Gothic arch, sculptures of figures carved into the stonework creating a dramatic and elaborate backdrop to the flagstoned street below, this magnificent feature flanked by tall multi-storied buildings. Below a small market appears to be taking place, with women, in 19th Century dress, go about their business, their bonnets and aprons highlighted in bodycolour. The painting has wonderful perspective, drawing the viewer down the arched passage to buildings beyond. A classic Grand Tour painting depicting life in late 19th Century Europe. The work is signed "A. Cardinal" lower left.

Date: The watercolour probably dates to around 1870 - 1890.

Artist Biography: "A. Cardinal" (19th Century) - Prolific artist of late 19th Century architectural street scenes, with classic Grand Tour influences.

Framing: Later plain moulded Gesso work. Finish: Gilt. The watercolour is mounted on board and has a off-white mount.

Condition: The painting is in good condition for its age, retaining good rich colouring. There is a scratch across the lower centre of the painting, although this does not affect the overall appeal of this picture which is well over 100 years old. The later frame has a few chips to the gesso work, consistent with age.
