This is fantastic quality and beautifully hand-worked. This is a cover of some sort, possibly a table cover or maybe a chest cover. The velvet is in the centre, surrounded by detailed borders of tapestry / needlepoint, all hand stitched.
It dates from the 1800's probably around 1880 from the design - it has a worn brown silk velvet centrepiece which has been rebacked, so it is all in good condition - depite the wear on the velvet nap. Around the edges there is a fabulous continuous needlepoint border almost completely worked in silks, very little wool stitches, just the brown detailing as far as I can see. The ivory background is in silk as well as the pale blue, ochre and reds, highlighting the design nicely.
The needlepoint border is 8 inches wide with a wool tassled fringing of 1.5 inches wide in pale grey, red and ochre yellow. The length around the outer edge of border is 16 foot.
The central panel is 46" by 32" with the border around. The overall width is 52" by overall 66" length. The detailing is quite superb and the fine work in silks is beautiful.
Please remember with vintage or antique textiles they are not perfect (unless I happen to mention they are!) so please do not expect that (believe me some people do!). If you have any doubts please ask before bidding, I will happily try to assist. Thanks!
