Women spun thread and wove textiles for their family households. Even in industrial contexts weavers and spinners were always women. Biblical descriptions attest that Israelite women assumed the responsibility of weaving textiles and producing clothing for their families and deities.
Exodus 35: 25 - And all women that were wise-hearted did spin with their hands, and brought that which they had spun, both of blue and of purple, and of scarlet, and of fine linen.
Exodus 35:26 - And all the women whose heart stirred them up in wisdom spun goats hair.
The tools that were used for spinning were primitive, but most early spinners were highly skilled craftsmen. Woolen and linen cloth were made for wool and flax. Camel hair and goat's hair were spun for sack cloth The fibers were drawn from the distaff and twisted into thread by means of the spindle. Textile manufacturing was one of Mesopotamia's primary domestic and export industries, and a large amount of spindle-whorl artifacts attest to the importance of weaving and textiles in the life of the inhabitants.
